In the North West there are:
- 22 public library services
- 15 universities and higher education colleges with one or more libraries each
- 64 further education colleges with library services
- more than 50 health libraries
- a large number of libraries in a variety of businesses and organisations
Libraries are at the heart of the community, school, university, college or business that they serve. From introducing toddler’s to books, to developing new ways of online learning and information management, libraries are key to the cultural, educational and economic success of the North West.
The government’s national strategy for public libraries, Framework for the Future, was published by the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) in 2003. We are working with public libraries in the North West and with the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) to deliver the key objectives of this strategy.
We work in partnership with a number of groups representing libraries in the North West, including the North West Academic Libraries group (NoWAL), the Society of Chief Librarians (SCL), and the North West Health Care Libraries Unit.
