Family Learning Week 7-15 Oct

05 September 2006

National Family Learning Week (FLW), 7-15 October, is an annual awareness campaign promoting and supporting organisations to run FLW events across the country.

Family Learning Week works as a 'hook' to draw people into learning, who might not otherwise get involved by offering it in a relaxed and familiar atmosphere. Throughout the country, schools, libraries, museums, sports centres and shopping malls throw open their doors and invite families to discover how to build a robot, create a Roman newspaper, prepare an Indian banquet or animate drawings. The combination of fun and learning are the main ingredients in the Week's winning formula.

Last year an estimated 5000 organisations took place with everything from cooking tips in community centres, sculpture in schools, to taster sessions in temples! And this year is set to be even more successful. By getting involved you could raise the profile of your organisation, uncover new skills, build new partnerships and help reach your organisational goals all at the same time.

FLW is shaped by the organisation holding the event and can be tailored to the needs of your target audience whether this is improving their health by organising a family fitness event or numeracy by organising a session on budgeting. Campaign for Learning can offer support - including ideas, promotional materials, and regional assistance - to make it happen. A key element of FLW is clear signposting to further learning opportunities that will help achieve organisational, and individual, learning goals. FLW can also be used to promote existing programmes offered in your organisation that your audience may not be aware or taking advantage of.

It's not too late to organise an activity - to help you campaign for Learning have produced a planning guide that you can download, order online or through the cfl call centre on 0870 350 2345. If you are stuck for what to do why not try the themes or partners section on the cfl website for some inspiration.
