New funding to learn from conflicts of yesteryear

23 August 2007

‘Their Past Your Future 2’ will run until 2010 and will see grants of between £500 - £10,000 being offered to museums, libraries and archives that successfully apply for the cash. The funding can be used to develop programmes, workshops, exhibitions and events which promote understanding of the impact of conflict.

MLA North West will be running a briefing for the sector on Tuesday 18 September, 11am until 2pm at the Lowry, Salford Quays, outlining the programme aims and funding criteria.

The Big Lottery Fund awarded the cash to the MLA so it could manage and deliver ‘Their Past Your Future 2’. The original programme - ‘Their Past Your Future’ -commemorated the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and was a joint project between the MLA, the Imperial War Museum and other museums, libraries and archives across the UK. DVDs of interviews with war veterans, photographs of life on the home front and community histories inspired people of all ages to discover more about the Second World War, how it affected the course of history and why it is still relevant now.

Nicky Morgan, Renaissance Programme Manager: Education and Learning said: “The first phase of ‘Their Past Your Future’ generated some excellent results, creating innovative learning activities for children and young people about the Second World War. This new round of financial support is great news for the sector. We encourage museums, libraries and archives to find out more about how they can get involved and develop this important work in a dynamic and engaging way.”

Organisations may apply for grants focusing on two areas: work with children and young people and inter-generational learning. The closing date for applications for the first year of the programme is 19th October 2007.
