The Reading Agency: order deadline for 2006 reading resources

The order deadline is approaching for The Reading Agency’s 2006 reading resources, as highlighted in the new brochure, which was made available on 1 October. Please note this deadline is Friday 27 January 2006. Major boost to career opportunities for knowledge workers

London, 7 December 2005 - The Museums Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) and Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) today announce a strategic partnership agreement to develop a more skilled and responsive libraries and archives workforce. Both parties have signed up to a three year programme of joint working which will open up greater opportunities for staff in terms of career progression and development.

Fleetwood’s fishing heritage to receive a boost from Heritage Lottery Fund

Images and information on Fleetwood’s deep sea fishing industry are to be preserved and made available for future generations through the Internet.
Over 900 trawlers sailed out of Fleetwood during the heyday of deep sea fishing and thanks to an award of £44,990 (85% of the total costs) from the Heritage Lottery Fund, an archive and online database are to be created.

This autumn the theme of the campaign is Beginnings and hundreds of organisations from Cornwall to County Clare will be unveiling the treasures of the archives and inviting the public in.
Call for Star Treasures nominations from the Northwest

This new initiative is in direct response to the Minister for Culture, David Lammy’s call for a consultation on the best way for the UK to implement the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the event of Armed Conflict and its two Protocols.

Precious violin adds another string to the bow of national heritage

London, 2 September 2005 – One of the world’s most important violins, the ‘Viotti ex-Bruce’ Stradivari, has been saved for the nation through the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council’s (MLA) Acceptance in Lieu scheme. Last year art and heritage items to the tune of £13 million were acquired in lieu of inheritance tax through the scheme.
