MLA looks for excellence in the public libraries of England

A consultation document A Blueprint for Excellence – Public Libraries 2008–2011, has been published by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) on behalf of the MLA Partnership. The MLA is supporting and challenging local councils to develop a modernised service.

The awards previously recognised excellence in museum, library and archive website accessibility – but this year, for the first time, the awards will include any project that uses technology to provide access to collections for disabled people.

Statutory Guidance on Section 6 Education & Inspections Act 2006 (Positive Activities for Young People)

The DfES has launched a consultation on the above, beginning 5th January 2007 and closing on 30th March 2007. This legislation, part of the Youth Matters reforms, requires local authorities to take a strategic and coordinated approach to providing activities for young people, of which a major element is cultural activities. This is to ensure that issues around young people’s participation in activities are addressed, such as access, cost, availability & sufficiency, local need, quality and young people’s involvement in the planning, design and review of services. The main target group is young people aged 13-19, but this may be wider depending on local circumstances and need.
